For immediate release, NuGold28 LLC out of Brighton, MI has released a crowdfunding effort to make a novel anti-viral agent called Carrageenan that provides physical vs chemical protection from numerous viral agents and may even combat the Covid-19 virus. Brad Lavey company president lists the global pandemic and the shortage of hand sanitizers as the reason for releasing the two products that are natural additions to harsh cleaners and chemical sanitizers. Lavey said he needs the crowdfunding to do testing on Covid-19. Carrageenan works on the Human Corona virus in preliminary studies, further testing needs to be done with Covid-19.

Carrageenan is hypothesized to work by binding with the virus and physically disabling it’s ability to enter the human cell and replicate. This isn’t just speculation either, in pubmed, the most exhaustive database of scientific literature there are over 200 studies linking carrageenan to virus inhibition. Carrageenan has been tested on numerous viruses including Human Corona Virus, Influenza, Rhinovirus, H1N1, HPV, HSV I and II and even HIV! The results are very promising and the natural product, found in yogurt and soups as a thickening agent was shown to be effective against these viruses in vivo (the body) and in vitro (in outside experiments).

For something to be used as a food additive, like carrageenan, it goes under intense scrutiny by the FDA to achieve what is called “GRAS” status. GRAS, generally regarded as safe, is used to qualify foods additives for safety.

Carrageenan is a soluble fiber extracted out of a red seaweed and has been used for centuries to thicken food and as an emulsifier and stabilizer. It has a unique ability to “gel” and bind to foods, yielding a consistent mix. First used in Ireland in the 1800’s, it has been used as a food additive used to thicken, stabilize and modify the texture of a wide array of food products including – jams and jellies, dairy products like milks, cottage cheese, puddings, and ice cream, and even meat products like hot dogs and lunch meats. It is a common ingredient in many foods we eat today.
