It is difficult for sport to survive on its own, regardless of its popularity or type. Sometimes there are the financial crisis, other times problems arise in management or the strategic planning for a particular team/player. As of this day, the situation with the Bulgarian sports sector, and football in particular, is somewhat bombarded by different turbulences that need to be resolved as soon as possible.

Quite often, that solution demands interfering from the outside. For some time now, one of the greatest and most popular football teams in the country, Levski Sofia, has been undergoing serious financial problems. In a recent interview, it was announced that the football club was deepening in debts of around BGN 30 million.

Luckily, the famous Bulgarian businessman Vasil Bojkov intends to take over the 26 th -time Bulgarian football champion. Vasil Bojkov, who has a background in the sports industry and related initiatives in Bulgaria, steps in once again to save another of the biggest national football clubs – Levski Sofia. Couple of years ago, between 1999 and 2206, he was the president of the professional association football club CSKA. During that time, the Reds are remembered for some quite impressive results. They beat Liverpool, Bayer, Shakhtar and won two championship titles. During Bojkov’s chairmanship in the Bulgarian Chess Federation,

Bulgaria was ranked 1st for both men and women. Once again, some of the most significant events in the Bulgarian sport history happened while Bojkov was also chairman of the Federation of Sports Shooting. At that time, Bulgaria got several Olympic medals. One of the most recent involvements of the businessman in sport includes the annual “Sportsperson of the Year” Awards in Bulgaria, which further reaffirms him as a true patron of sports. Now though, it has been already confirmed that the financially troubled club Levski Sofia already has a new owner in the face of the Bulgarian billionaire. His company Nove Holding made an announcement, confirming the news. In the official press release they said:

“Dear sports supporters and media, In relation to the increased public interest and the questions regarding the upcoming changes in the management of PFC Levski, we would like to inform you of the following: For more than a quarter of a century, Mr. Vasil Bojkov and the companies related to him have been supporting the Bulgarian sport and the Bulgarian football in particular, and have been working towards their better development. Levski is undoubtedly the most popular and recognizable brand in the local football spheres and as such it holds the potential for a very successful business partnership. This is why the group of companies which Mr. Bojkov is part of are involved in the necessary reorganization, management, financing and long-term development of the club. The partnership will continue as long as there are opportunities for growth and the business interests of both sides share the same views.”

As it becomes apparent, Vasil Bojkov will not only ease the financial burden but will also breathe new life into Levski. He sends a clear message regarding football and the sports culture in Bulgaria – it holds great potential. There are plenty of talented young athletes and already well-established sportspersons who are ready to score great achievements. It has been done in the past and it can be done now as well.
