China Issues Product Standard for Baby Toddler Walking Assistants

China has issued GB/T 35448-2017 – a new national standard for baby toddler walking assistants. The standard came into effect on July 1, 2018.

China has published its first national product standard for baby walking straps - GB/T 35448-2017. Issued by the National Technical Committee of Garments of the Standardization Administration of China, the new product standard was originally included in No. 32 announcement of 2017, which covered newly approved national standards.

According to the standard, a baby/toddler walking assistant is defined as: intended for infants who can sits and walk by themselves. It will provide general structural support and protection when practice walking. In general, this means children aged nine to 24 months.

The standard covers baby toddler walking assistants made from textiles, but similar products can refer to this standard. The standard includes:

• Requirements for textile fabrics and filling materials:
o Textile fabrics must comply with category A requirements in GB 31701-2015
o Textile fillings and down fillings must comply with category A requirements in GB 31701-2015 and shall use new, pollution-free materials. Other filling materials must comply with the requirements of related laws and compulsory standards
• Requirements for attached components:
o Attached components on the baby toddler walking assistant must comply with GB 31701-2015
o Limits of harmful substances in attached components must comply with the requirements in Table 1 of GB/T 35448-2017
o They must not have accessible sharp points or edges
o Attached toys and accessories intended for play must conform to relevant standards
• Requirements for construction:
o Strap seam strength – straps that provide support and lift functions must be tested
• Tensile force of Buckle and Strap accessory – Tri-glide button, D-ladder lock, square buckle, hook buckle and clasp must be tested for insertion and closure
• Overall impact property under fixed load – connectors, buckles, seams, straps, fabrics and so on, must not tear, have broken sewing threads, or ravel, and fabric breakage at pressed parts must be tested
• Requirements for marking and instruction for use:
o Contains details of contents, safety warnings, label, specification for marking and instruction for use
• Requirements for packaging:
o Packaging and product must not use sharp items, such as metal needles
