Donate generously to help meritorious student: Amit Jha overcome financial hurdles and present his paper in San Diego
( | Press Release | 2017-06-24 16:57:59 )
A paper co-authored by one of my classmates, Amit Jha, has been accepted for oral presentation at the prestigious SPIE Optics+Photonics 2017 conference to be held from 6-10 August, at San Diego, CA, USA. The title of the paper is, “Analysis of photonic spot profile converter and bridge structure on SOI platform for horizontal and vertical integration”. This project is a part of an emerging and very exciting field known as integrated optics: the optical analogue of integrated electronics. In the present research, two new integrated optics circuits: known as the spot profile converter, required for horizontal light coupling and the bridge structure, to be used for vertical integration, both to be made on the high-index contrast SOI platform, have been proposed. These structures can soon find its way into commercialization via patent and fabricated in large-scale, for various sensing and photonic applications.
In order that the paper gets published in the Proceedings of SPIE, Amit will have to travel to the US and present the paper. Coming from an economically challenged background, the question of self-funding doesn't arise. To make matters worse, his institute hasn't agreed to fund the trip as well. At this point of time, the situation is pretty gloomy, and there is no real saviour in sight.
Right from his childhood, Amit has always been inclined towards science and mathematics, and possesses a rare hunger to fathom the intricacies of nature, and unearth the principles behind different machines. When he finally got the chance to pursue his love: engineering, in university, he did so wholeheartedly and has been able to maintain an extremely strong and consistent academic record, throughout the past four years. He is also a former president and a founder member of the Techno India SPIE Student Chapter In his capacity as a SPIE Student member and chapter officer, he has worked relentlessly for the upliftment of this chapter, and has supervised and guided the research and outreach activities of the chapter with utmost diligence. The chapter, has in the past two and a half years of its existence been actively involved in optics R&D activities, under the able guidance of Prof. Saikat Majumder of the Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering Department. It has also organized guest lectures by eminent scientists like Dr Abhas Mitra, Prof Bishnu Pal, Prof Toyohiko Yatagai, Dr Rajesh Kumble Nayak and most recently, Moumita Dutta of ISRO, and also conducted several successful optics outreach activities aimed at marginalized sections of the society.
We, being his close friends, cannot bear to see his dream of presenting the paper being crushed in front of our eyes. That is why, I come to you with the humble request of donating any amount you find suitable, for this noble cause. Your generous help will allow a bright mind, crippled by poverty, live his dream.
