Zurich, June 2017 – From a simple repair order to a routine maintenance-reminder, through to asset management, from checking the mini-bar to the handling of guests’ feedback or tracking luggage: If you take a closer look at the diverse functionality of the hotel software SAMFEX, you quickly realise that the well designed and simple user interface contains a wealth of interdisciplinary knowledge. In just a fraction of a second, the app connects everything that belongs together. It communicates directly where staff would previously pick up the phone or have to run from one place to another. It "thinks" one step ahead, so that its users can remain physically and mentally in the here and now. The brains behind this engineering marvel is the native Rhinelander Alexander Melle – a qualified electrical engineer who graduated from the Technical University in Darmstadt, long-standing hotel-insider, and a classic car enthusiast. Together with his team, he has been launching the hotel industry’s back-of-house management into the 21st century for some time now – from the private boutique hotel, to the apartment complex, right through to the international hotel corporations.
An IT expert with a passion for the hotel industry: Alexander Melle
Alexander Melle wrote his first programme in Langen near Frankfurt when he was 18 years old – a POS system for radio and television shops. Immediately after graduating from school, he founded his first company, giving a glimpse not only of the 20-year-old’s courage and entrepreneurial spirit, but also of his enormous curiosity and desire for innovation. In order to underpin his self-taught knowledge with a degree as quickly as possible, Melle enrolled at the Darmstadt University of Technology in 1990 to study electrical engineering, and specialised in micro-electronics & data technology.
After his graduation, he founded and served as managing partner at the former Konnexionen GmbH, specialised in network technology. He then moved to Hyatt International and took over the position as Director of Information Systems based at the Shared Services Centre for Europe in in Mainz. Between 1998 and 2007, Melle was responsible for the Information Technology of the German Hyatt Hotels, and in his extended role he looked after IT for Hyatt in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He opened a total of 11 new hotel properties in the region and was responsible for IT and network projects, such as the introduction and implementation of a central European IT helpdesk. During this time, the empathetic Mainzer-by-choice discovered that there was a need for a smart software solution that linked the various back-of-house areas such as housekeeping, maintenance, asset management and services with one another, making communication easier for employees working under time constraints wanting to provide the best possible service to the guests.
After almost ten years of experience in hospitality IT, the now 49-year-old founded Mellex AG, based in Schaffhausen on the Rhine Falls, developed SAMFEX – with the mission to improve not only the guests’, but also the employees’ experience. Following a ramp up phase of around 5 years, he put the software on the market in 2011 with its core product. Since then the solution was enhanced by numerous upgrades and modules; interfaces have been added to a number of property management as well as building management systems, the Internet of Things has become part of the SAMFEX technology solution and the energy management and philosophy Green-One has been launched. The market has accepted SAMFEX because the hotel industry is a sector in which every labour- and time-saving device is priceless, and every step not taken is a genuine relief for the hardworking staff. In 2016, Melle and his team (which in the meantime had increased to ten) enlisted the help of popular mascot S.A.M. to work as virtual field support for the Mainz-based Mellex Services UG, home of the 24-hour SAMFEX customer hotline. Today, S.A.M serves as a sidekick and mentor for the user, is green, quite cute and knows everything about SAMFEX.
Thanks to his innovative international clientele, Alexander Melle never runs out of ideas and projects for the further development of SAMFEX.
If he ever needs a break, the pioneer dedicates some time to his third passion – young-timer cars. His favourite car brand is Audi, because the Ingolstadt based company’s quality and understanding of design appeals to him – and perhaps also partly because of its slogan: “Vorsprung durch Technik” (lead by technology).
